Marriage Equality in New Jersey

October 22, 2013 | Posted in News

Wedding bells are ringing statewide! Here’s the latest news on New Jersey’s current stride towards equality.

A liberal triumph has prevailed the state of New Jersey as it became the 14th state to recognize same-sex marriages as of yesterday, October 21.

If you and your partner are ready to tie the knot, check out our banquet venues throughout central NJ. Special offers are coming soon in honor of this landmark decision!

In September 2013, the Mercer County Superior Court ruled that the state must comply with United States v. Windsor, a June 2013 U.S. Supreme Court decision guaranteeing that married same-sex couples received the same federal benefits as heterosexual married couples.

In Garden State Equality v. Dow, the court ruled that because New Jersey only allowed civil unions, which are not recognized as marriages under federal law, the state treated same-sex couples unequally.

A decade of relentless fighting for equality has paid off as New Jersey Governor Chris Christie finally withdrew his challenge against the legalization of same-sex marriage after a court determined that the appeal was not likely to falter, reports Fox News.

Round the clock vows are being exchanged since early Monday morning, and a wave of relief and vindication has come over the gay community.
