Four Reasons Why You Should Instagram Your Wedding

August 20, 2014 | Posted in Catering, Events, Weddings

Weddings were once announced by newspaper ads, but this is not the case anymore. The good news most likely spreads through social media. With the rise of social media, it only makes sense to utilize it as a tool for your wedding. Some couples choose to discourage their guests from using social media during the wedding, while more and more couples are now embracing it.

  1. A Different Perspective– Couples often hire professional photographers to shoot their wedding, but even the professionals can’t get photos of everything. There are bound to be some missed moments. With Instagram, your guests can help fill in some of the gaps from their own perspective.
  2. Guest Engagement– Utilizing Instagram helps get guests more engaged and more involved in the wedding. This encourages guests to take great photos because it allows them to help tell your story. For example, you can even have your own Instagram contest- whoever posts the most creative or artistic shot could win something.
  3. Instant gratification– There is a wide range of photographers with varying tastes who edit wedding photos in differing styles. Photographers will take the time to edit your photos very nicely and tastefully, but this takes time. As soon as your wedding is over, you will probably want to see your photos. This is where Instagram can help you relive the moments of your wedding day.
  4. Virtual photo collection– Pictures that guests post onto Instagram are free. You should make your own wedding hashtag that you should use throughout the wedding process: put the hashtag on your save the dates and encourage people to use it during the bridal shower, the engagement party, and the actual wedding itself. That way, you can easily search the hashtag and find photos you like for free. There are even apps, such as eventstagram that allow you to collect all photos that have the same hashtag. Your hashtag should be short, to the point, and relevant to your wedding. For example, #mransmrsthompson, #haltpartyoftwo, #coppockwedding, or #johnandkate6132013.

Although we are advocating for people to Instagram their weddings, we would like to remind guests to please be respectful and courteous to the professional photographers, event staff, and other guests. Do not block shots of the couple. Remember that as a guest, you are there to celebrate with the couple, so it is completely fine to step away from your phone and live in the present moment.
